Re: [RC] Help: My Mare's Eating Water Hemlock & I Can't Kill It - steelsidedownI found some sites with pictures: (I'd never heard of this plant, wanted to "see" it! :-)Spotted Water Hemlock (cowbane) http://www.vet.purdue.edu/depts/addl/toxic/plant27.htm http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/wetland/plants/water_hemlock.htm Couple snipits: -- watery juice, which is more or less narcotic in its effects on the animal frame (tee hee, no wonder they keep eating it! Old Socrates left here enjoying visions of dancing purple elephants!) -- I also ran into information over and over on the exact roads in Illinios this plant was growing.. sounded as if that was the only place it is found? -- I'm guessing you're in CA? It also is mentioned if grows in low marshy areas?? One site mentioned water parsnip is often mistaken for it... here's a picture comparision.. http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/cropprot/whemlock.htm Good luck with your mare! It's a poison and gives her loose poops but is likely damaging her liver, as well as her GI system. It's an elusive plant and I can't kill it with weed-whipping. It reproduces like crazy and is everywhere. She only does this at this time of year as once it gets bigger it's, apparently, not as tasty. Had the idea of using a cattle prod or some type of electrical modality to really ZAP that water hemlock but don't have a clue if I could rent one in our urban environment (Berkeley/Orinda). The local rental place has nothing like that. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
