Re: [RC] Help: My Mare's Eating Water Hemlock & I Can't Kill It - Barbara McCraryYou're probably right, Bob. Her weed is probably wild hemlock, not water hemlock. We lost a bunch of young heifers one year to water hemlock. It tends to grow in swampy areas, whereas wild hemlock, aka wild carrot, grows in drier areas...hills, pastures, etc. It can make a horse sick, but apparently doesn't kill them.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Morris" <bobmorris@xxxxxxxx> To: "'Jill Cohn'" <jillcohndc@xxxxxxxxx>; "'Ridecamp (E-mail)'" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2008 4:10 PM Subject: RE: [RC] Help: My Mare's Eating Water Hemlock & I Can't Kill It

It's a poison and gives her loose poops but is likely damaging her liver, as well as her GI system. It's an elusive plant and I can't kill it with weed-whipping. It reproduces like crazy and is everywhere. She only does this at this time of year as once it gets bigger it's, apparently, not as tasty. Had the idea of using a cattle prod or some type of electrical modality to really ZAP that water hemlock but don't have a clue if I could rent one in our urban environment (Berkeley/Orinda). The local rental place has nothing like that. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
