I agree that I spent time removing nails.  A good thing to do while/or instead of watching the boob tube.
 
For attachement to the trees I found that my local builder supply stocked galvanized nails intended for siding that were just fine.
 
When I weld used horseshoes into items for the barn or home, I nail them up with large horseshoe nails.
