We have similar restrictions in our nearby state park,
that prohibits use of Dolomite on the ground. So we use flagging and signs
stapled to trees, hopefully above the reach of most hikers, but they still
manage to pull off signs and flagging occasionally. One time, a park
ranger who had not been informed of our ride, pulled all the markings at a very
strategic junction. Fortunately, we discovered this before the ride,
replaced the flagging, and had the supervisors inform the rangers of the
upcoming event.
If you guys are allowed to use paint, you are so lucky.
For several years, I used this wonderful colored spray chalk that wears
off over time to mark the BH trail. Both the BLM and US Forest Service
made me stop using it. They won't let us permanently mark the trail
either. That's one of many reasons why the BH is so darn difficult to
run and to mark. Sigh...
