While cross contamination is a concern with strangles and any other equine transferrable disease please do not panic.  There are lots of solutions.  If you are worried about cross contamination at an event simply have every horse and human step onto towels (I use bathroom carpet) that is soaked with a 10 parts water and 1 part bleach solution.  Have a wash stand near that owner's can wash their hands as well as their horses faces and nostril areas.  And, of course, any sign that a horse has a snotty nose or appears to be sick horse, the horse is turned away.  It's just that simple.  Careful monitoring and follow through is the key.

I do have a horse in California, and while he is the Most Beautiful
Horse On The Planet, he does not do endurance and he is not coming to
EMS. I myself will be washing all my clothes, and bringing a whole
new unworn set anyway, including new shoes. I won't be hosing myself
down with chlorhexidine, but I will take a shower.
