Re: [RC] cantering - Barbara McCrary

I'm an expert on ruining horses with the extended trot.  I loved the extended trot, the faster the better.  Then I was discovering my horses were tearing suspensory ligaments.  I couldn't figure out why until after my fourth horse with suspensory injuries and I thought "what is the common denominator here?"  I finally figured out it was the extended trot.  DUH!  You wouldn't think it would have taken me so long to figure it out, but that was a number of years ago.  I've learned more about horse physiology through endurance riding than I would have learned any other way.

Oh, also, I'm personally don't prefer an extended trot either. I believe it can lead to suspensory injuries. So I keep my mare just behind that in her trotting. I rarely let her extend her trot totally and for sustained periods of time.

JMHO,

happy riding!
