RE: [RC] [RC] [SPAM] [RC] Pounds of hay - heidiIn my mind, supplements of anything should be used only when needed. The finding that baseline chloride requirements are actually almost 3 times higher than what was "assumed" is a bit of a major "oops" moment . A horse on a predominantly or exclusively forage ration at usual intakes and up to "moderate" (now defined for feeding purposes as 3 to 5 hours/week, predominantly walk and trot) work levels will be fine. However, horses not being generously fed forage, if not ad libitum, are headed for trouble. Yes indeed. And that's why there is a "maintenance" level for feed, and a "work" level--and why horses eating at "work" level (3-4% of their body weight in good forage) should get hog-fat if not working or lactating. Most of mine will back off to a level below 3% of their body weight voluntarily when not in work (and when it is not cold)--but I have a couple of them who don't, and who are in the "diet pen" this winter, only getting feed increased when the temps drop below zero!
