Re: [RC] riding styles - Kathy Klenk

I tried this yesterday, not quite as exaggerated as in the picture but definitely leaned way back at the canter. I could not tell if the horse actually changed his way of going or it just felt more easy going /comfortable to me because of the way I was sitting but there Definitely was a difference. It was a nice day and I haven't been riding Flurry for quite a while and we were by ourselves on a new trail so he was a bit wound up. It really seemed different when I leaned way back like that though.
You all probably know this already but I tried something different on Sunday on my Hilly ride with Ramsy. Going up hills I tend to either come up out of the saddle a bit or try to stay very still. I must have heard the analogy somewhere that if I had a backpack on me going up a hill wouldn't it be easier on me if the back pack was still versus wiggling around. I took that too much to an extreme and would be as still as possible. Sunday I tried something at the walk, on the not steep enough to get out of the saddle hills, I exaggerated my movement forward as if my butt was helping push him up the hill. Ramsy is not good with hills. This helped. He wasn't even breathing hard at the tops of the hills let alone stopping for a few breaths like he did last year. He might just be in better shape but I think going with his movement worked well for him.

I have to say, every time I leaned that far baack on my Anglo-Arab mare, she tried to scoot out from under me, did NOT like me leaning back like that. Don't know if she would have gotten used to it if I did it more. If you try it, be prepared for a reaction. jeri
