It's not so rare around here.  The Gunnison River Basin and the Colorado River basin are areas where high concentration of Se is found in the irrigation water, and thus in low lying meadows where hay is often grown, you can have high concentration of Se in the grass and hay.
 
Here are two links to websites, anyone in western Colorado might want to have their hay tested.  It's always a good idea to have your hay tested, no matter where you live, so you'll know what you're really feeding in terms of protein and minerals.
