It may be that the ride is a point to point rather than a loop and the 500 
m"gap" that is mentioned is the difference in elevation between the start 
andthe finish (which means more climbing than descending).? To make it a 
"greatlydifficult" ride it could also go up and down like a yo-yo between the 
start andthe finish.
