Re: [RC] First Horse - SHEILA A WALSH - Carrie - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

Sheila -
I had mentioned in an earlier post about my experience with "horse trading" and
it was all about finding the right horse for my kids and admittedly for myself
when I wanted a "Ford" instead of a "Farrari" ride. <g> I was so sure my kids
would just be SO excited to have a horse of their own (that's me projecting)
because after all, they came from my loins! They never got the bug either! Go
figure. Every now and then, if I bribe them with the right amount of payment,
they'll clean corrals for me, but that's about as far as it goes. :( I don't
get it. They're just weird. Lol
On the "first horse" note, I think my absolute first was my Grandpa's knee.
I'd make him bounce me as high as he could for as long as he could stand it!
Yeehaw!! Then when I was 3, I got my stick horse, Blackie. (Guess what color
he was?)
Carrie

I wouldn't trade my upbringing for 145k acre ranch with no horses. I don't
remember when I started to ride, cause I had "big" sisters that took me riding
in my diapers, to get me out of my mother's hair. So, when I had my first kid,
I rode all the way up until I went into labor and then I got back on with him
in my front pack to shut up his crying. Worked great. He even rode until he was
14 and discovered that riding was for girls. I was bummed that he didn't have
the bug.

As Winston Churchill said, "No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the
saddle." As Shakespear wrote in Henry V, "When I bestride him, I soar, I am
like a hawk; he trots the air, the Earth sings, when he touches it; the basest
horn of his hoof is more musical that the pipe of Hermes."

I grew up thinking I was deprived.Â? I wanted my parents to be farmers and they
were schoolteachers.Â? But my godmother had an old spanish land grant ranch of
about 145,000+ acres in Hollister (California).Â? Every time we went there all
I got to see was the airstrip, the indoor pool and the chincillas.....no
horses.......I was so bummed.Â? But she did send cool Christmas presents.

Oh I LOVE that!Â? I was horse crazy, too.Â? My grandfather was a rancher, had
cattle and also bred AHQA horses, I followed him around constantly.Â? I grew up
in the barn, literally.

My sisters and I were so totally nuts that our first horses were palomino
coloured "suitcases" (yes, you read that right)Â?that we rode around the
house.Â? We must have had very good imaginations...we had a lot of fun with
those "horses" and never got bitten orÂ?bucked off!Â? Thankfully, it was only a
few more years before we got to start riding the real things.
