Re: [RC] First Horse - vickie5364

I've been horse crazy all my life. Wanted a horse since I was 5( maybe before :) ). My dad hated horses, but finally got one for me because it was one of my jobs to bring the cows in from pasture to be milked and we had 2 really mean Holstein bulls that would not let you in the pasture on foot. My first horse was a shetland pony that was only broke to have kids ride around on her back while being lead. So, of course, what do I do but hop on and take off. No saddle and just a hay string bridle and reins, no helmet ( who heard of helmets in those days?) Pony bucks me off ! And continues to buck me off everyday until I learn to stick !!
She really was a good pony tho. I can't remember her ever spooking at anything except a St. Bernard that was as big as her. I trained her to do all kinds of things : pull a cart, drag Tee Pee poles, haul calves on her shoulders, ride 3 kids at a time. In the summer I think I spent 8 hours a day on that pony. She lived out the rest of her life on the farm, and pasted away well into her 30's.
Good memories here too !!

My sisters and I were so totally nuts that our first horses were palomino coloured "suitcases" (yes, you read that right) that we rode around the house.  We must have had very good imaginations...we had a lot of fun with those "horses" and never got bitten or bucked off!  Thankfully, it was only a few more years before we got to start riding the real things.
