Re: [RC] Ticks????Help!! - Carrie - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

You really need to first, pick them all off. Yeah, I know, GROSS! Then
as a prevention, there IS a repellant like Frontline, etc., called
EquiSpot. It's not available in some states though.
Carrie

When I first moved to Lightfoot Stables, my horses had horrible tick
infestations. I was told that the horses will eventually get a little
bit of "immunity" against the ticks, and subsequent years I did find a
lot less ticks. I never thought about calling the vets for tick
bites, but then again Lyme disease is really serious. My horses lived
through the infestations without problems.

I got pretty emotionally immune to ticks, but some of my barn buddies
are on total tick quest obsession. I'm probably a bad mom, because I
just roll my eyes and say nothing when they are verbally obsessing.

I found that Equitrol worked well for ticks. However, I only used it
once and I hate the chemical taste it gives me after I handle it.
Washing in Orvus worked well for paralyzing the ticks (or even killing
them, I don't know) and I was able to wash the ticks out easily.
Others apply fly spray religiously every day on the legs - mostly
those with stalled horses that they occasionally ride in the park and
get (shudder) ticks.

To me, it's just another thing about having pasture horses at a public
boarding stable. You got to tolerate a few bit marks, ticks, burrs in
the manes and tales so that they could live a happy life of benign
neglect.

O.k. so just found out that although YES Florida has lots of
sun..................they also have lots of ticks!!! I just got to
Florida
from Canada two weeks ago and this is the first time in my life I have
ever
seen a tick let alone know how to deal with them.( SO be gentle
:-)))))))
One of my Arabs was covered in bumps yesterday we washed him with
dishsoap (
supposed to kill ticks??) and Dettol ( mild antiseptic) gave him some
antihistamines and covered him in fly spray after he dried, did the same
thing today, he is looking better.,
My other mare was suffering from them as well though was not nearly so
bad.
SO............is there a better way to deal with them? I am off to some
tack
stores tomorrow to see what they have for tick repellent, is there
anything
available like the dog one that you just put on once a month??? Also. do
I
need to call a vet if the horse's have been bitten?? How do I know if
they
have Lyme disease?

THANKS!!!
Every day is a learning experience!!!!

Chrystal :-)

P.S Can I I still use the horse's grooming brushes or do I have to wash
them
after their tick experience???? ( Yep.total newbie at this:-)
:-))))))))))
Stop laughing!!!!!!!
