[RC] First Horses/Chevron - steveb

My first horse was a 2 1/2 year old gelding. He was going to be the
breeder's next stallion, but was a bit hard headed and had several bad
experiences with trainers, the last one included running through a fence
and getting a wound on his shoulder that required a number of stitches.

So the breeder gelded him and put him in the pasture with the mares for
most of a year. I met him when my wife was looking at another gelding and
we just bonded.

There were several problems with this. He had a bit of ground training,
nothing more and nothing in most of a year. I hadn't ridden since I was a
young teenager and not much then, and I was over 50. And I didn't want a
horse.

Well I ended up with him and after a few more ground training lessons and
then 30 days of training (and two lessons for me), I set out to join my
wife in endurance...well not really, but I was going on training rides
with her and one thing led to another.

Five years later and many bumps and bruises, thrills and chills, I just
received my 250 mile chevron in the mail yesterday. He definitely isn't a
3S horse, not particularly well mannered, 15-2 hands, and bossy. But I
love the boy and can't wait for the season to start again next year.

It's definitely an addiction...he's not my only horse now.
