Subject: Arabian Ledgend?

I remember a similar story about a Bedouin father and son being pursued across the desert. Father asked son "What color are the leading pursurers?" "Black" he answered.. "We must ride on the hottest side of the dunes, blacks tire more in the heat"
The blacks fell back. "Now who is following closest?" father asked. "Chestnuts" son said. "We must ride in the rockiest places, chestnuts have softer hooves" The chestnuts slowed. Next the son said greys/whites were closest. I do not remember what the father said about these, but they slowed as well.
When only the bays were following closely the father told the son, "Now we must ride for our lives, they will not falter or slow."
Sorry I don't remember the part about light colors, it's been a long time ago (:>) but I've always remembered it, at least in part.
I think I read this in a book of short stories/ledgends about horses as a child???.
If anyone comes up with a credit I'd like to know.
TIA

Dot
