I've seen a few crushed aluminum stirrups that happened when a horse fell 
down.  

Mine got mashed like that and my farrier just beat it back out & reshaped it on 
his anvil. I kept expecting it to break but it's lasted another 10 years or so. 
The sides of my stirrups have slowly gotten a polished knifelike edge from 
rubbing against my half chaps. I should probably file that flat before it cuts 
my leg off but it's so smooth and pretty. :-)

Do the plastic stirrups have enough weight to them to be able to easily reach 
down and grab them with your toe? I've heard they're wider and considered going 
plastic eventually for that reason.
