It goes back a long time since we used it when I was running - and that was a long time ago. See for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fartlek for a little history. It's also interesting to note that it's used quite a bit by the military - there is "Fartlek Hill" at Quantico. I remember that well when I was playing around with special ops in a previous life.
