John Crandel made the comment (re: the start) that matches Lynn's  
observation. He and Cheryl were together at the start (the team  
strategy paired John/Cheryl, Kathy/Val, Jan/Meg together, with John/ 
Cheryl pushing the hardest through the ride).

John/Cheryl were positioning themselves in the groups right b/f the  
start when John became aware of how fast the leaders were going to go  
out. He didn't want to get sucked along and they turned back toward  
the gates to break contact with the front. the music/announcement AND  
the amazing crowd noise made it too difficult to get turned back  
forward and they ended up fully disengaging from the front of the  
ride during that initial run.

It really was quite amazing.

(the crowd noise really was quite unique. There were people 20-40  
deep the full length (maybe a 1/2 mile) of the trail leading out...)
