Local girl is top national junior endurance rider

This is not your typical girl-and-her-horse story.

Not unless you define "typical" as the love-hate relationship between a teen-ager and the $150 rescue horse she rode at breakneck pace for 11 hours to win the national American Endurance Ride Conference 100-mile junior championship.

Actually, Joni and Cash Bonus won more than that lofty title. At age 14, the East Lawrence High School freshman finished fifth overall in the AERC 100-mile national championship, besting 45 other riders, all adults.

For his efforts, Cash also earned the title “Best Condition” and was named the #1 half-Arabian by the Arabian Horse Association.

The championship ride, which took place earlier this month in Henryville, Ind., was Joni’s final ride as a junior.
