[RC] Girth gall - Sisu West Ranch

Some of you may remember that I had trouble with an older Wintech girth. The vinyl (PVC) had lost plasticizer and cracked. Well I just solved a similar problem.

A couple of years ago I purchased a "Soft Touch" (TM) girth. It looks great. The Neoprene wraps most of the way around, there is a welted seam and the back (away from the horse) is nylon cloth.

Anyway, this summer I started to see some girth galls on a mare. Did the Desitin trick and rode on. About a month ago I noticed one in a strang place. A detailed look revealed that the welt was vinyl, and had cracked. This area, even though far away from the horse, does contact the elbow when the trot is very extended. I purchased a more conventional neoprene girth where the neoprene goes all the way around and the problem went away.

Bottom line: I now stay away from Wintech, Professional's Choice, and Soft Touch girths.
