Any mileage less than 100 is not the truest test of endurance and accomplishment on a national level.That said, I remember when the national champion, only one rider, was one who rode numerous rides for the highest finishing positions. Somehow we decided this did not give everyone the best opportunity to be the national champion. I also remember WHO was the national champion in any given year, because there weren't a "dozen or so" national champions. Somehow we decided that the only way to determine a national champion was one head-to-head race. And we decided to give a national championship in every weight division, every distance, etc. Is there any wonder why there are less 100 mile rides nowadays? Whatever we have come up with has certainly diminished the honor of being THE one and only national champion. It certainly took all the excitement away from the awards presentations, at least for me it did. I know there are others who feel the same way, but I don't know how many others.
