Re: [RC] 100's - Katrina Mosshammer

I guess I would fall into that category. The last time I did a 100 I was 17yo and now I am 30. I retired my gelding and then was busy with high school and college. Then when I was ready to start riding I had to find a replacement for my gelding. I started riding an Arab/Appy mare that one of our close friend gave to us who had gotten an EPM like sickness at age 4, just after she had attempted her first LD, and so had been turned out in the pasture for 2 years. I took her at age 6 and we did a year and a half of LD and were just about to try a 50 when she started showing symptoms again. This time it affected her eyesight and though she is now fully recovered she has gone blind and I can't ride her any more. So the another year went past looking for a replacement and then finally in 2006 I found my Perle girl. She and I clicked from the get go. She was almost 8 had done some CTRs and had been used a schooling horse for lessons. we had a great year last year and and had planned to try a 75 in Feb but she was a little tired after her 50 in Dec so we opted for the 50 instead. then 2 wks later at a 50 she was pulled for a heart arrhythmia and we've been trying to get that figured out and have talked to several vets and done many test and have tried treating it and now I think I'm just going to start riding her as it seems to not bother her. Add that to losing money on our ride along all the money we have put to vet bills, my surgery, fixing the truck after it got hit, putting a new transmission in the car, etc., my plans have been blown out of the water.

I really had planned on trying to do a 100 this fall but life happened. So I'm just going start over again next year and try again.

As to motivation...If you could bring the planets in the right alignment, that would be great. :-) I do have an ace that I'm holding though. My friend Shelia Dale has been doing this for about 5 years now and after the first couple of years I started to bug her about moving up to 50s, which she didn't think she would ever be able to do, and now she completed most of the days of S2S last year and is entered in the 50 NC on Sat. After a ride a couple of weeks ago at breakfast I started bugging her about doing a hundred again and she finally agreed that she'll do one when I do one, so I told her in 2010 we're gonna do it. (The good lord willing, and the creeks don't rise) ;-)

Subject: [RC] 100's

I am currently working on a program designed to encourage participation in 100's for either those who have never done one, or those who haven't done one in a long while. I need everyone's help. Please either email me privately, or post it here, and give me two things: A list of the reasons you haven't tried or won't try a 100 miler, and a list of the things that would truly push you over the line and motivate you to begin training and planning to do a 100. Thanks, Bruce Weary
