Re: [RC] Newbie with a Concern - Truman PrevattYou must mean Jim Fixx. Fixx was not an athlete in the truest sense of the word. He didn't start running until he was in his mid 30's. At the time he started running he weighted 240 pounds and smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day. He started running to get his health back. He wrote a couple books about it. I sincerely doubt it was his weight when he was fit that caused his massive heart attack. The heart attack was caused by atherosclerosis - probably from the days he gained weight up to 240 pounds and the two packs of cigarettes sure didn't help.Ever person and every horse has an optimal weight for performance. The challenge of the rider is to find that weight and maintain that weight. In addition, as I have heard a few times, many riders "know" that a real athlete should be lean. Of course, lean athletes bite the dust (think Jim Fix), and so this is NOT healthy. The bottom line is that for MAXIMUM output, the input must be sufficient. Indeed, one would HOPE to provide MORE than just sufficient. One wouldn't give the same amount of WATER to an endurance athlete as one would to one's pasture potato would one? Ig you are seeing ribs on a horse before he moves a muscle, GET HIM SO GROCERIES< WOMAN! or man.... Now, I could use that ribby diet myself.... -- “The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.” Friedrich Nietzsche =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
