RE: [RC] Ringbone and borium shoes - Jill CarrMy 12yr old carriage horse has borium on his shoes & he's been shod this way continually since he was 5. He doesn't do the mileage that our endurance horses do, but he's never been lame, off or sore. The borium has worked well for him, especially since we do a lot of road work, but helps as well on hard packed dirt, gravel, dry grass, granite, whatever. I used to do combined driving with him & the borium gave him a lot of confidence on the turns & hills where, without the borium, he'd tend to slip. I'd really like to try it on the endurance horses, but I've been too chicken, since we do about 1000 miles per year and I've heard people say that the "grippy" borium could cause trouble. My personal opinion is "grippy" may be les dangerous than "trippy" or "slippy", but like I said, I'm too chicken to try it. I'd love to hear also from anyone who knows if one way or the other is better.
