Re: [RC] Gaited Endurance Horse registry - Anderson, Kristie Lynn

A large majority of (equine) breed registries were developed based on a horse's
"way of going" and a specific sport.

All of the modern gaited breeds have a common thread of the way they move. TWHs
can be tall or short, stocky or lean, etc. Some are jug headed and others
refined. THe primary selection criteria early on was the running walk. Of
course, now they're still selecting for movement, but a pacey horse is desired
for the showring now. MFTs, RMHs, Peruvians, Paso Finos, etc were created the
same way.

Standardbreds - the only registration criteria was that the horse could trot or
pace the mile within a certain time requirement.

TBs - fastest horse in the world on the mile.

QHs - fastest horse in the world for the 1/4 mile

Arabs - superb distance athletes

Because horses are working animals, it makes sense for breeds to be created
based on the way that they move. Certain bloodlines within breeds are developed
and known for certain abilities: WP, EP, HUS, Dressage, Jumpers, etc.

I think there are much sillier things for which breeds are developed. American
Paints and Spotted Saddle Horses are color registries for the QH and TWH
respectively. Years of breeding for color (and disregarding more important
things such as "way of going") have resulting in a lower % of quality animals
within the breed. The modern Appaloosa has morphed into a color breed of the QH
as well, and is facing similar problems, and losing the uniqueness and quality
of the breed.

Many of your foreign warmbloods - Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Oldenburg, etc - are
nearly indistinguishable. THe registration criteria is based on in what area of
europe that horse was bred.

Subject: [RC] Gaited Endurance Horse registry

How can you develop a "breed registry" for a particular horse's 'way of going'
and a specific sport?  That's not a "breed!"  Isn't that like developing a
breed registry for floppy-eared dogs that play frisbee?
