Re: [RC] [Endurance Riding: News] Future of Olympic equestrian sport under threat - Maryanne Gabbani

Ummmm, what's new? This has been the interesting political thing for me from day one of the UAE push to get endurance into the Olympics. They have been paying BIG, BIG, BIG bucks funding the FEI for almost 10 years now to get endurance into the Olympics, all the while the IOC has been saying that the only equestrian event that even might have a place in the Olympics was the Pentathalon...not a highly visual sport at all. I'll bet that most people don't even know it exists. The IOC has been trying to dump equestrian sport for years and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they do. But I can think of some people who are going to take a long hard look at the FEI and their checkbooks if they do dump them.

Kate Green, H&H reporter in Hong Kong

THE president of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has warned that the status of equestrian sports within the Olympic movement is precarious.

Princess Haya told H&H that despite the undoubtedly great sport and brilliant organisation of Hong Kong, there is no guarantee that horse sports can survive in the Olympics beyond 2012 — or even get that far — and could follow sports such as cricket and polo out of the Olympic door.

"The FEI has a huge fight to even get to 2012," explained Princess Haya, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the FEI's first elected president.
