[RC] feeding starving horses - Dot Wiggins

An old rancher I knew, in the cold, deep snow country where I used to live, Would sometimes find stray cattle and horses snowed in and starving. If they were too weak to move through deep snow he would pack in alfalfa hay, some oats, and salt, build a fire, melt snow, and make a bucket of soup for each one. They could digest the soup, but were too dihydrated to eat dry hay or grain. Only took a few days to be able to slowly get them out. By the time he had ridden every day there was a pretty good open trail. He always said it was the lack of water that shut down the system after they got to feed so wet food was essential to survival. Of course this was long before IV fluids were common.
By his system sloppy beet pulp mashes, perhaps alfalfa mixed in, would be fine.
