I used to do a lot of Centered Riding lessons with my hand on a neck rope (flat mountain climbing rope or similar).  Learning to stabilize my hands.

Use an old english stirrup leather or any other, suitable leather strap around the neck to balance with. Some people attach a luggage handle looking strap with snaps on each end to the two breast plate rings  in the front of an english type saddle. They grab that when horsie acts up.
