I cut Zephyr's mane once.  He's an Arab x Rocky Mountain Horse so he  
has a really thick mane that goes down below the top of his leg.  This  
isn't a great pic but it sort of shows the problem.

tie knots in it when the come to ride at night.  I've always had to  
roach the last 8" because it gets under the saddle even if it's braided.

One winter I just got really sick of it and chopped it off.  He looked  
like the cutest little hunter pony and I LOVED how easy it was to care  
for.

My family and friends (in person and on the internet), however,  
succumbed to apoplectic fits.  My mother was convinced he would be  
mentally/emotionally scarred, and offered to come put in HAIR  
EXTENSIONS for pete's sake.  Extensions!  On a HORSE!

I just let it grow out.  Keeping it neat (and yes, braided for  
competition), while a pain in my butt, is easier than dealing with the  
fallout.

Call me a wimp if you want.
