I have also had my horses mane so tangled in the reins that I had only one-sided control. Yes, braiding works great to avoid that problem.

I braid to keep my guys mane from wrapping around the reins. Otherwise I'll
go to pull back and not get anywhere because they're tangled. While he is
very exciting to ride at a gallop we tend to miss turns that way and man
those sliding stops because of the killer rocks are well killers lol.
