Re: [RC] Trail safety. Good to know!! - Sharon Levasseur

That's one of the reasons rhythm bead necklaces (for horses to wear) are so popular. My own personal sets are as loud as I can stand them... I call them my Bear Bells. The ones I sell to other people are somewhat quieter because they take some getting used to, but on special request I do them like mine.

While riding together at the Big Horn 100, Marirose, Tennessee and I
got into a conversation about riding or hiking with people who tie
obnoxious little bells onto themselves and their horses to alert bears
that they are on the trail. I thought that some people might be
interested in the biological and behavioral reaction differences in
bear species to this method of diversion, as seen on a trail head post
in BC:

"WARNING due to the frequency of Human/Bear encounters, the BC Fish
and Wildlife Branch is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and any
person using the out of doors in a recreational or work related
function to take extra precautions while in the field. We advise the
outdoorsman to wear little bells tied to their clothing so as to give
advance warning to any bears that might be close by so you don't take
them by surprise.
We also advise anyone using the out-of-doors to carry "pepper spray" in
case of an encounter with a bear.
Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity and be
able to tell the difference between Black Bear feces and Grizzly Bear
feces. Black Bear feces is smaller with lots of berries and squirrel
fur in it. Grizzly Bear feces is larger and has small bells in it and
smells like pepper."
