RE: Re: [RC] [RC] hauling - Debbie Parsons

I just got back from an "epic" cross country hauling experience. I started out
by unloading mid-day
for about 30 mins. This worked OK for the first 2 days. On the 3rd day, it was
time to be silly so
I cut the time out of the trailer to 15 mins--in the trailer once the goofiness
started up. The 4th
day, I don't think we made it to 15 mins before I loaded Boomer back up because
he was just being
obnoxious and I didn't want to risk him pulling away from me. I stopped at the
back parts of truck
stops or shopping areas under construction where there was little traffic. I
gave up unloading
after the 4th day and would just stop for about 30 mins and untie his head (I
haul my horses tied
but on a long rope to keep them from turning around; just don't like the idea
of weight shifts).
Boomer had no problem peeing when I stopped.

I kept a bucket of water hanging in the trailer (used one of those soft rubber
buckets). I don't
think he drank much of any on the 3000 mile trip to CA but by golly, when I
loaded back up 2 days
after I got there when Tevis was cancelled, my non-eating, non-drinking horse
decided this was
serious business and started to eat and drink very well. He really cleaned up
on the drive to
northern WY. I'd refill his bucket on stops and he'd drink from it whenever we
weren't in motion.
And he was eating whenever I stopped as well. He likes to travel in the back
corner of the trailer
and doesn't step up to eat while the rig is moving. I was traveling 500-575
miles/day most days and
driving at 60mph made for a long day. I stopped about every 150-200 miles, most
of the time only
long enough to add fuel and grab food/drink for me. I would have preferred to
have unloaded for 30
mins mid-day but decided the risks were too great with a horse who wanted to
move and drag me
around. The 30 minute rest stop in the trailer seemed to work OK as an
alternative. I'd probably do
that on a one day trip over 400 or so miles since it did encourage Boomer to
eat and drink. I just
hope he remembers what he learned the next time I haul him.

Debbie & Boomer
FL to the Big Horn 100 in WY via Auburn, CA . . . it could only happen to me!

My one horse study:

My horse pees in the trailer, but he doesn't drink. I stop and let him out IF
I find a safe bare
piece of ground next to a fast food restaurant, so "I" can eat and pee around
the 4-5 hour mark of
a trip. I always put a fresh bucket of his home ranch water in front of him,
but I never see him
drinking out of it. Just to relax for 13-30 minutes helps my mind, and I bet
it helps his.

Good point, Karen. Luckily, ours have no problem peeing the in the trailer so
that isn't an issue
for us (except at cleaning time .. . . yuck. lol)

Neither of my horses like to pee in the trailer. So, I stop after 4 hours, let
them out and let
them pee. Keeps us all happier :-)

Probably an old topic. Do you leave your horse in the trailer the whole

way say on a 6 hr. trip or do you unload every so often. Either way,
what are your reasons?
Thank you.
