Patti,
I'm not a Doc. But, I have been told by doctors to find a more
"Cerebral activity" My answer to that is to find a new doctor
or negotiate. Docs are often worried about liability. So, it's
convenient for them to tell you this.
 
You can likely find an air cast or a brace which will take the
strain off your foot while riding. And if you find that you
ride with the traditional heels down posture, stop that.
 
Learn to ride with little or no pressure in your stirrups. Happy
to help you with some exercises for this if you want.
