Most wanted to believe that people were competing on their own ability and were honorable in their intensions. Today we know that some of our best runners were in fact using drugs for years to enhance their performance. Florance Joyner had a trick of substituting clean urine in her test to hide her drug use. Very clever the way she did it. Flo Jo died at an early age. The list goes on, Marion Jones, the winner of the 2007 Tour - in fact many of the Tour riders. It was so bad in the Tour de France that many sponsors are pulling out.Will it become a problem at FEI level championship endurance - you bet it will because humans are involved and why should they be any better to the long term welfare of their horses than they are to themselves? It's sad but I think a fact of life that should be recognized and deal with before it becomes an issue. If MLB had a decent drug policy with random testing monitored by the International Antidoping Agency - they would not be before congress today. I think we have time to address it.
