RE: [RC] [RC] The Real Reason (s) It Is a False Analogy - heidi

Actually, the reason live theaters charge more for the more desirable
seats is because they can.

Which has nothing whatsoever to do with fairness, does it...

What is undeniably true is that a rider in the 50-mile ride is getting
twice as many miles of trail as a 25-mile rider. And about twice as
much riding time. Yet you keep trying to find ways to justify charging
the same for it.

But the red herring here is that you are assuming that the only "value"
in the ride is the number of miles traveled. For many, the "value" has
little or nothing to do with the number of miles, but has more to do
with the overall experience.

I am "denying myself" entry into an LD ride that charges the same entry
fee as a 50 because it just isn't worth it to me. But also, I admit,
because it's a way of "voting with my feet."

That is certainly your perogative. But as with most "votes," if you are
in a minority, the ride managers won't miss your entry.

If what you want to do is ride a 25-mile ride, why should you be
expected to pay the same as the people riding a ride twice as long?

Um, maybe because I got to camp in the same campground, the manager paid
the same public lands use fees and AERC fees, my horse was seen by the
same vets, I used the same portapotties, I ate the same dinner, it took
the RM just as long to process my paperwork, and I got the same
T-shirt???

Don't get me wrong--I like to see a bit of a sliding scale for entries,
too. But it is up to the RM to price as he or she sees fit, most RMs
barely cover their expenses, and I'm not going to pout over $10 or $20.
I'm going to enter the distance that my horse and I are up to doing, at
the ride that fits my schedule and that I want to ride, and I'm not
going to get my panties in a wad over it. I've been in the RM's shoes,
and while not all of 'em do things exactly the way I'd do things, if
they do it their way and pull off a decent ride, that's what counts.

Heidi
