There's another factor y'all are not considering.  You say that the 
fixed costs are the same for LD and 50.  Well, not so fast.  Suppose you 
only had an LD ride?  Yes, I know that's now allowed, but just 
hypothetically.

With only an LD ride you wouldn't need your vets all day, and you 
wouldn't need them the night before (you can vet in LD riders in the 
morning, as they can start later).  If you pay for your campsite you 
would only need it for one night, not two.  It is the 50-mile riders 
that require those additional costs, not the LDs, so why should those 
costs apply to LD entry fees?
