Re: [RC] [RC] LD and placings - Maryben Stover

Nevertheless, the AERC bylaws define endurance as 50 miles or more..................mb

OK ... since I was the one that used the term "second class citizen" ...

I was reacting to the original posters description of the RMs speech: where the RM specifically said  that LD was considered to be training, so they were not giving placements or BC.  There are lots of reasons for not giving LD placings or BC; such as the RM feels that it encourages racing.  To me, the reason that was given translates to:  "you LD folks don't count".  If I was planning on riding an LD, and had a choice between going to a ride where I felt welcomed, and one where the RM pretty much discounted all the LDers,  I would go to the one where I felt welcome.

BTW - the local rides here always give the placements and times for both the LD and the 50.  I've always appreciated that.

One local ride always has a "Fun Ride" of 15 miles as well.  For that, no placings are given, but that is why it is a Fun Ride.  It is put on to help introduce people to the sport, and at the ride meeting, they are told that, while they don't *have* to present to the vet at the 10 mile vet check, they are *welcome* to do so to give their horse experience.

I also could never say I've been treated like a 2nd class citizen rider.  We've been treated with kindness and concern at the rides, just like all the other riders, but I think in the sense of the overall rules and what counts and what doesn't, there is disparaging evidence against LD rides counting for anything more than just another training ride.  I believe that's what she meant.  I could stay close to home, save a ton of $$ on gas and sleep in my own bed and ride 25 miles on our own trails, but I don't.  It's just plain not as much fun!!  I prefer the personal challenge of different trails, meeting new friends, and camping with my sweet hubby and my horse.  :)
