[RC] LD and Joe Long's post - sherman

I’m fortunate that my conditioning partners and I practice all these things as we’re preparing for our 50s. We practice separating, pacing, spacing, leapfrog, moving away from naughty horses, etc. I think going to poker rides is probably a better “training ground” than a 25 or 50. Speed and naughty behavior are not a good combination.

This is a really huge statement, and I agree. The race venue is not the place for learning things such as manners, no tailgating etc to take place; a horse HAS to learn certain things that can only be learned at a ride, such as pacing in a crowd, staying out of harm's way when one encounters a bad actor; camping nicely, eating well in a fracas, etc. At my age and stage of life, I don't want to find out that it is Yayhoo buckaroo when a horse whizzes past - at a RIDE event. EEK! If this happens, I did not do my homework. Frankly, I am more concerned about my horse just leaving camp half the time. The food thing...
