Re: [RC] The LD thing - Truman Prevatt

At the FL Classic in '96 we had the opposite case - the LD's were less expensive by quite a bit since we hired half day vets to take care of the peak load. We were able to get the cost down per rider in each distance by the judicious use of half day vets to manage the peak load. I had all out checks so this included breaking vets out to go back to the finish - and then home. While I agree that the LD fixed cost is close to the longer distance fix cost - I think there are rare circumstances where they are exactly the same or should I say where they have to be the same.

If I run a ride again which is highly unlikely (after some experiences with trail vandals, jerk land managers and idiot riders pushing horses too hard for the conditions and crashing them) the charge will be based on the cost involved for each event and let the riders choose.

My LD's cost at least as much as the 50's at Longstreet's Charge. If I
had 92 entries in just the 50, instead of broken up between the two
distances I wouldn't have to hire an extra vet to break away and be at
the other check for the rush at their finish, so it would be cheaper.
Next year I plan for both distances to cost the same.

My dream would be to put on a 100 someday and have all three distances
cost the same. Hopefully bargain hunters wouldn't be able to resist the
extra miles for the dollar. :-)
