Re: [RC] Overall milage for horse - Jody Rogers-Buttram

That is fine for regional groups.  They can (and do) set things up to serve their own
needs.  But, miles are not equal in this sport.  If they were, we would have tons more people entering the 100 milers.  It takes a whole lot more to reach mile number 90 in a 100 miler, than to reach mile number 90 in LD's.  Four LD rides and you are there.  Note, it is going to cost you more to it in LD's, lots more fuel costs, travel expenses, time off work, etc.  And I think that most folks here would agree, that as you go up in distance traveled in a day, the difficulty of traversing those miles increases.  It just isn't the same animal.  So therefore, it shouldn't be grouped with "other animals".  Now, for the sake of arguing, you could certainly say the same about 50 milers and 100 milers.  And when it comes to awards/points, for those willing to risk the one day 100, rather than lots of 50 milers, the 100 miler can really rack up in points in fewer rides.  So, it is just a matter of making the choice.  Do I want to risk the more likely non-completion on the 100, but gets mega points, or do I want to play it safe and ride the 50.  Same should apply to LD, IF WE group miles, then points should be as well.  Same situation.  Should you play it safe and ride the LD or, risk it and ride the longer distance for the greater points.    I suppose what I am saying, is you just shouldn't be able to have your cake (awards/points in LD) and eat it too. (grouped miles).

PS.  CTR should never be counted in AERC.  That really is a different animal.

Don't see why.  In the Midwest (UMECRA country), all miles completed by each horse {LD, Endurance,  & CTR (called "competitive riding")} are lumped together.  All of the programs are healthy, all have individual awards, horses are recognized for their achievements, and the sky does not fall.
