[RC] FW: was: endurance spouse, now why girls need horses - Faustina Duffy

Just a little background...my father was a truckdriver (money written all over THAT profession, right? <snort!>).  He raised 4 kids, me the youngest.  When I got started in horses, MANY folks would ask why Mom and Dad were willing to ...endure...the expense of a horse.  Dad explained 3 simmple facts of why EVERY young girl, if she's interested in horses, should have one...here they are:

1.  It delays interest in boys, at least serious interest, for a time.

2.  Once the interest DOES develop, it weeds out the worthless boys fairly quickly ("Cause ya can't go out 'til chores are done, and if he won't help, they take all night.  If he won't haul hay, etc., the romantic looks tarnish pretty quickly!)

3.  Most importantly-once a girl learns to put 1200 lbs of horse in it's place (and restrain it for vet procedures it doesn't want to cooperate with) a 200lb boyfriend is NOT likely to pull anything she doesn't want to cooperate with, herself!

However, for those of you who are still on the lookout for the perfect guy, I do not recommend introducing them to haying until after they fall hopelessly in love with you...and maybe you've given them a heir. Springing haying on a new boyfriend may not ever allow you to get past the introductions.
