Re: [RC] [RC-Digest] Vol: 03.5939 - Truman Prevatt

I have talked to several vets that have said some people actually stay on the trail too long. The one thing that seems to never be discussed is the back. Saddle time - somewhat independent of speed adds linearly - tires the back. I remember my the first time we took my daughter backpacking. We got her a little kids pack. She was 7 at the time. My wife and I were carrying most of the stuff. We put our daughters clothes in her pack. We told her she didn't have to go any faster than she wanted and we could stop as often as she wanted. Well two experienced backpackers used to at least 10 to 12 mile days (depending on terrain) - went 3 miles in 8 hours the first day. I can tell you - my back has never been as tired as it was that. We did a little better the second and 3 days. It took my back longer to recover from that trip than it did to hike 45 miles of Bull Frog Creek and down the Paria Canyon in 36 hours - long before this was the "in thing." My back was fine after the Paria Canyon trip - my ankles were what got trashed.

The more tired the horse's back the more compensation which puts stress on the legs. In realty there is an optimal speed for each rider horse combination. It is most likely not the "entire time." Longer is not always better.

To balance out the idea of "the quicker you finish, the shorter the suffering" is the advice I was given early on..."speed kills!" If the first philosophy was true, then those people who do sub-5 hour 50's would have the oldest horses competing. That doesn't seem to be the case. I too like Julie Suhr's short 'n' sweet advice..."Never hurry never tarry."
Chip (who's goal this season is to do a few more sub-8 hour 50's!)
