Re: [RC] [RC] [Endurance Riding: News] FEI: Proposed Rule Changes for Endurance - Katrina Mosshammer

And I can give one instance when I was personally glad that we have that rule.

When I was 17 I did a 100 in Texas and I was the ONLY person doing the 100. Just as I was about to leave for my last loop a hellacious storm rolled in and we had torrential rain. The last loop was a road loop which had also been the first loop but it was raining so hard you could barely see where you were going in the dark. Mom talked to the ride manager and she agreed that mom could follow behind me to light the way. To tell you the truth, it was the horse who did it all. I literally stuck my nose in his mane until the rain stopped all I saw of the road was what was under his front feet. Once it did stop raining I was so grateful to have a full set of dry clothes right the in the truck to change into. Funny thing about that was while I was changing clothes the deputy sheriff pulls up and asked what we were doing. We explained but I don't know if he truly believed us. He looked at us like we were nuts or something but he let us go. Gee, it's not normal for a woman and a young girl to be out in the middle of nowhere on a country road in the middle of the night changing clothes...with a horse. What's so strange about that? :-)

Once he let us go she went on ahead to camp and I came in on my own, all nice and toasty warm. :-)

I can't imagine why they (the FEI) would do such a thing ... crew vehicles should be used only to get the crew to the vet check, and NEVER allowed on course except in an emergency. Truly a bad rule.

While I agree the rule is bad and FEI style Endurance is an abomination, let's not tar them with brushes that belong to AERC, ie, our own Rule 6k:

6k. ...A crew may accompany their rider down a public road
in a support vehicle (unless there is a ride management
prohibition against it) provided they do not push or haze
the equine.
