The reason the 100, 200 and the 400 are the most popular events in human track - it starts and within a minute and at most one lap around the track it is over. Lone gone are the days where the "track heros" were sorts like Prefontaine, Shorter, Keino, Ryun. In reality the spectators (and betters) only want to see the sprint at the end for the wire. I suspect it's the same phenomenon in horse racing.

Kat, I think you're onto something there. And sadly, the primary reason for shortening the races is the pressure from the betting public. They don't want to sit through a race that might take more than 2 minutes. Sad, sad, sad.
