[RC] Malibu 55 2008 - Don Huston

I think this ride lived up to its reputation of being the toughest in SoCal and I loved it. My horse might have been the only barefoot horse using boots in the 55 but I'm not sure. The GPS data shows a total distance of 49 miles, total elevation up of 10400ft and of course 10400ft down. A real endurance test. That giant climb we tailed after lunch was 2380ft in 4.8 miles (or 9.4%) with only one little quarter mile level spot, the rest was a steady grind all the way up to Buzzards Roost which made it even tougher than the infamous Bulldog which was only 1600ft in 3.4 miles (or 8.9%) with no level spots.

That is a link to the GPS data and a map and a profile.

These MPGo boots are really working great. The trails and roads were hard and rocky but the boots totally protected the hooves and allowed my horse to trot many of the downhill rocky sections, including all of Bulldog, to make up for the time lost walking the relentless uphill sections. Walking the tough parts paid off at the vet checks where my horse met the 56bpm criteria within 2 min every time. Of course we were not racing, we were enjoying the ride and still finished 30 minutes before cutoff just in time for dinner. Doesn't get any better than that, great ride, great dinner and a happy horse.
