Nancy -
In the scheme of things a CK of 12K isn't 'that bad'. That kind of level is
fairly common in a horse with chronic tying up and has actually been seen in a
horse that has exercised heavily without any apparent issues. I have an Arab
gelding who got loose and galloped with a much fitter horse for about 12 miles
after I had ridden him for four hours, and he tied up. He was never stiff in a
classic tie up stance, but I saw him pee maroon so had the vet come out. She
drew blood a day or two after his jaunt and his CK was around 30,000, I think
it was, and because CK drops very quickly (has a half life of about 2 hours
once the damage stops), he was probably double or triple that when he tied up.
When you're up around 100K, I think it's gets a bit hairy and I'm probably
lucky he didn't end up with kidney failure or obvious damage. I'm not a vet,
etc, so don't take the above as gospel, but I'm sitting in a veterinary library
right now and what I'm finding in
the 5 Minute Equine text matches my memory of my horse's event.
