Re: [RC] how to camp at biltmore (and getting there) - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

From sounds of it, it sounds like campground, vet area is very spread out?
Is it walkable from camping to vet area? Or will we have to drive back
and forth?

They're notorious for switching the vet check back and forth year to year so
hard to say for sure. Last year the vet check was in the dressage arena and all
parking is from there spreading in one direction. If you get there really early
chances are you can get really close, but the field is long and narrow so it
doesn't *surround* the vet check, it's linear away from it.

We'll be there wed night-sunday.

Note that they charge camping and use of trail fees for extra days. This year
they've also added extra charge for more than one crew person per participant.
That's the first time ever for that.

4 hot sweaty days haha. Any place around with shower houses so we can
scrape the crud and sweat off every once and awhile?

The French Broad River.

How far will we have to go to get things like ice, water, restock food, etc?
Can get it on the estate? Or are there places nearby?

You can go out "The back way" on the back driveway by the barns and it's not
far...mile or 2? and then you're right in a very developed part of
town...restaurants, stores, etc. No place to buy things on the grounds.

Anything else we should know about camping there that is important, other
than the norms (other than its going to be blazing hot or wet)?

No trees for picketing. You're basically parking in horse paddocks that have no
shade. There are water hydrants pretty regularly. A bicycle is handy to travel
around camp if you park farther out.

Don't want to count on rest areas as we've been to some with no good water
access other than bathroom sinks.

I think it's illegal to unload there too. If you'll post the road names of your
route you might get more response. I will say that if you happen to have to go
on ...is that 40 that goes from towards Knoxville to Asheville...that there's
no place along there much. Very narrow gorge.
