His trot throws me all over the place and I cannot get him
> to "gait" instead of trot.


I wanted to write and express my sympathy.  I have a Standardbred gelding 
that I just love.  He's the nicest horse to handle and be around and has the 
worst trot on the planet.  And he paces, even worse.  Our  daughter bought 
him for an endurance prospect and  was having the worst time learning to 
post.  She's so athletic I just couldn't figure out why she couldn't learn 
to post.  Then I rode Twist.  She has gone on to other horses and swears 
that every beginner rider should start on a horse like Twist.  All other 
horses will seem easy.
