Lets not forget that there is another completely moral, and rational way to 
breed horses, production of using horses that will not be bred on.


I agree, Ed.  Breeding the occasional foal for one's own use, having researched 
what it is that one wants, is no problem to anyone.  I was talking more about 
people who label themselves as "breeders" over the long haul.

I grew up in the sort of situation you describe--we bred a couple of our better 
ranch mares out to a local Arab stallion who was himself one of the best "using 
horses" in the county, and I grew up riding the half-Arab offspring of those 
matings.  We bred five of those, but lost one to an inquinal hernia when he was 
gelded--so we actually raised four of them.  I think only one of those horses 
was ever sold, if memory serves--and that one went to another rancher who 
wanted the same sort of critter for the same reasons we did.
