What about Pemphigus?  Sounds like a possibility.  Especially after she
mentioned the problem with scratches.

Yowzer!  That does sound like stress cracks, although maybe he whacked
the worst one in addition, making it worse than the other side.  Most
times they don't separate at the ride--but if they are bad enough, they
sure could.
